Mile Two

There's an air quality advisory posted for Central New York from 11 AM to 11 PM today and, since I've previously been diagnosed with COPD, I decided to do my outdoor mile a little earlier than what will likely become my routine.

The temp was only 80, out on the track, and sunny, but the humidity is already noticible--a contributing factor to the air quality concerns. But a slight breeze kept it comfortable and, since I don't melt until somewhere around 90, the day's fitness walk was quite pleasant again.

My time for today's mile was exactly the same as yesterday's, 17 minutes. But if I remember anything from Mrs. Schneider's 8th grade geometry class--besides the fooling around I did on my way to a C- in the third marking period--it's that the farther you are from the center of the circle, the farther it is around the circle.

Now, back when my fitness walk was 2 miles around the Henninger High School track in the city, I was having trouble keeping track of my laps. And so I would start my walk in lane one and, at the end of each lap, would move out one lap. I'd then do lap 4 twice and then move in one lane with each lap until I was back to lane one.

(Which meant that lane 4 was where I really had to concentrate. And the truth is, I probably did a substantial number of 2-1/4 mile fitness walks because I'd always forget if it was my first or second lap on lane 4 and, because I didn't want to short my program, I'd always assume I'd done only one lap even though it might've been two.)

Now normally, I do all of my math on paper because, you know, you have to show your work. But I'm gonna cut myself some slack here because doing it on the computer screen is kind of the same. So, 8 laps x 1/4 mile per lap = 8/4 miles. And 8/4 = 2/1. And 2/1 = 2 miles.

What I'm getting at is that, having done the same on this track--except that I started in lane 4 and moved in one lane after each lap--I actually did a little more than a mile in the same time as I did an actual mile yesterday.

Mrs. Schneider would be so proud, LOL. As long as she didn't ask me to calculate how MUCH farther I had walked today than I did yesterday. But doesn't this just beg to be written up as one of those awful "word problems" that we used to hate on the standardized tests?

Anyway, I'm back at the house now, getting hydrated in my air-conditioned office before doing my workout. I need to get all of that done, along with showering and putting on some nicer clothes, because my daughter and her 3 girls are taking her husband and me out to dinner at a Japanese steak house for Father's Day.

Only thing is, I'm probably gonna stick with the seafood and/or fish since I'm also afflicted with the infamous "steakhouse syndrome." Which means that, unless the steak has been put through a blender--which is probably not a steakhouse menu option--it could get stuck on the way down.

And we don't want that on Father's Day, now do we? No we don't!

So have a good day, everyone. And take small bites and chew your food carefully, lol...
