Improbability
Aug. 8th, 2013 11:24 amCaught in a moment of improbability, I found myself searching for my father's face in a Romano Archives clip of American GIs socializing in London just days before the D-Day landings.
And although I didn't see him, the improbability being epic, there was a Red Cross nurse, in an early frame, that had set off my search. (There'd been one like her, who'd risen high up in things and dated the colonel that my old man had served as a driver.)
Anyway, there was the evocative music, the crude color and the oddly-cut frames, and afterwards I wondered, of the faces that I'd found, how many had ever made it back, to be seen by kids they hadn't known they'd had, defying an improbability as epic as this hope of mine.
How many, of the ones who'd stared into that lens and tried not to think, for just that moment, of what was waiting just ahead...
